Amphibious Bus Tours: European Best Splash Rides

You may have dreamed of flying through the sky on a broomstick. But have you ever imagined exploring a city from a bus… before splashing into the water without ever leaving your seat?

Probably not. And that is precisely why an amphibious bus tour feels so delightfully unexpected. There is something irresistible about a sightseeing ride that suddenly abandons dry land, to the astonishment of passengers and pedestrians alike. One minute, you are rolling past monuments and busy avenues; the next, everyone is grinning as the city reveals itself from the water.

Far from being a one-city curiosity, amphibious bus tours can be found in several destinations around the world, each with its own scenery, atmosphere and splashy little moment of theatre. So, where did this wonderfully odd idea come from and where can you climb aboard one today?

What exactly is an amphibious bus ?

Despite its rather playful appearance, an amphibious bus is not simply a bus with a driver who has taken a suspicious interest in riverbanks. It is a vehicle specially designed to travel on both land and water: on the road, it moves like a coach; once afloat, it navigates like a boat, thanks to its watertight hull and marine propulsion system.

But sightseeing was not the original purpose of amphibious vehicles. Their story is rooted in much more serious chapters of history. During the Second World War for example, the United States developed the DUKW,  pronounced “duck”, an amphibious military truck designed to transport troops and supplies from ships to shore, then continue over land when docks or harbours were unavailable.

The nickname may sound almost too perfect, but it was no charming branding exercise: DUKW originally came from General Motors’ model code. History clearly has a sense of humour.

After the war, some of these practical vehicles found a rather more cheerful calling: taking passengers on sightseeing trips instead of carrying military cargo. The ancestor of today’s amphibious bus tour had traded wartime logistics for city views, curious travellers and, eventually, a very satisfying splash.

Why people love amphibious bus tours ?

"We went on lots of other tours later, but this was definitely the best one"

"The combination of sightseeing, laughter, and the unique thrill of driving straight into the river made this a truly special experience"

"The ride down was fun and at times hair raising. All added to the fun."

"my little girl (she’s 5) thought it was the coolest thing ever and hasn’t stopped talking about it since!"

Not every sightseeing tour becomes a lasting memory. An amphibious bus tour often does, for one simple reason: the vehicle is part of the experience.

Travelling through a city by bus is familiar enough. Driving straight into the water, without changing seats, is something else entirely. It is unusual, surprising and just theatrical enough to make the tour feel like an adventure rather than a simple itinerary.

First, there is suspense. Even when you know the vehicle is going into the water, the approach to the ramp produces a wonderful little collective wobble.

Then there is perspective. Waterfront cities are often two cities stitched together: the one experienced from pavements and boulevards, and the one revealed from the water. An amphibious tour links them without a change of vehicle.

Finally, there is the shared silliness of it all. An amphibious bus is serious engineering with a comic silhouette. The experience tells you plenty about the city, while keeping things pleasantly quirky.

The best amphibious bus tours around Europe

Amphibious sightseeing exists in different forms around the world. For this selection, we have chosen to focus on experiences aboard modern amphibious vehicles, all in Europe, designed with today’s passengers and city tours in mind. Different cities, different waters, different personalities but the same rather irresistible moment when the road ends and the splash begins.

Ocean Bus in Stockholm

Spread across 14 islands and stitched together by bridges, Stockholm is a city where water is never far away. So an amphibious bus feels particularly at home here.

Our Swedish cousins at Ocean Bus take passengers on a 60-minute tour through the capital, travelling both on land and on water in the very same vehicle. The bus sets off from central Stockholm, passing some of the city’s best-known sights before making its much-awaited entrance into the water.

Once afloat, Stockholm can be admired as it should be: from between its islands, with the city unfolding along the shoreline. Elegant, watery and with just the right amount of splash, this is a sightseeing tour very much in tune with its surroundings.

Les Canards de Paris

We could hardly talk about amphibious bus tours without mentioning Les Canards de Paris. Not only because, well, we are Les Canards de Paris, but also because Paris remains one of Europe’s essential city destinations.

That may sound like a very French way of introducing ourselves. We promise, however, that for French people, we take ourselves remarkably lightly. We are serious about what we do, but we also like bringing a little joyful craziness and off the beaten path discoveries to Paris and its famously elegant, cultural image.

Led by our lively guides, passengers travel through the gorgeous streets of the capital before splashing into the Seine, where a lesser-known side of Paris comes into view. It is culture with a twist, sightseeing with a sense of humour and proof that even the most refined city can enjoy making a splash.

Hippotrip, Lisboa

Lisbon has its hills, its azulejos, its codfish… and a small bright yellow amphibious vehicle with a very lively atmosphere on board. It belongs to our colleagues at HIPPOtrip.

The tour takes passengers on a 90-minute ride through the Portuguese capital, including around 25 minutes on the Tagus River. Once the vehicle splashes into the water, passengers can admire some of Lisbon’s most emblematic landmarks, including the Belém Tower and the Monument to the Discoveries.

With energetic guides, plenty of passenger interaction and a vehicle that is impossible to overlook, HIPPOtrip fully embraces the playful spirit of amphibious sightseeing.

HafenCity RiverBus, Hambourg

Home to Europe’s third-largest port, Hamburg has a very particular maritime atmosphere. Its connection with the water is lively, industrial and deeply linked to the rest of the world: ships, warehouses and harbour architecture are all part of the city’s character.

Our colleagues at HafenCity RiverBus offer a 70-minute amphibious tour, with 40 minutes on land and around 30 minutes on the Elbe. Starting in the historic Speicherstadt, the route passes through HafenCity before the long-awaited splash. Along the way, passengers discover Hamburg landmarks such as the Speicherstadt and the Elbphilharmonie, before seeing a more unexpected riverside landscape from the water.

One useful detail before boarding: the live commentary is in German only. A good excuse to brush up on your Deutsch before the trip or simply to settle back and enjoy Hamburg’s scenery.

Other amphibious tours exist aboard Second World War vehicles or replicas, and their historical side can be part of the experience. However, these vehicles were not originally designed to carry sightseeing passengers. For a land-and-water city tour, we recommend choosing a modern amphibious bus conceived for today’s passengers like those in Paris, Lisbon, Hamburg and Stockholm. After all, taking a bus into the water is already quite an adventure. Better choose one made for the splash.
